President’s Message

The officers & directors of the Club want to thank the general membership for placing their trust & confidence in the present administration as the slate of officers & directors presented by the nominating committee were elected unanimously at the annual membership meeting.

This administration will do our best to further the cause of the GSP in Indiana.  Having had a year of experience, we are now ready to move forward with more club activities that hopefully will involve as many members as possible and provide for many special interest activities for you to enjoy with your dogs.

The annual meeting was well attended in spite of the weather with 53 members enjoying the breakfast at the Brickyard.  We all enjoyed the presentation by Major Gen. James McCoskey and many of us purchased his book, Gunning Adventures in Germany.

The IN GSP Specialty and Sweepstakes went well thanks to Erin, Christy, and Christen and the club realized some profit for the treasury.

The BSTS was a huge success again with many people stopping by the Demos on Sat. & Sun. to talk about their own GSP’s. More people than we realized own GSP’s and were encouraged to join the IN GSP Club.  Thanks to all of you who helped with the Demos and manning the booth all week.

We have lots of work ahead with the Fun Test, Training, and Mock Hunt Test to be held March 24th.  The Hunt Test is all set to go on March 31st and April 1st.  The NSS in mid April will require lots of help from the membership.  Volunteers will be appreciated, contact myself or Christy Featherston if you can help out.

Keep your eye on the calendar page on the website as we enter the summer months.  Well will try to have more training sessions this summer as birds become available.  We would like to spread these over the state more.  If anyone has a field or training area where a session could be held please let me or one of the directors know.  If you would like to have training session in your area and would like to help organize it, the board will be more than happy to work with you.

The officers and Board look forward to another great year and as always all meetings are open to the general membership.  You are encouraged to attend and add your input to the clubs activities.  Enjoy your time with your GSP’s and have a great summer.

I want to congratulate one of our members; Terry McWilliams, of Greenfield recently placed 4th in the Bass Masters Classic Tournament held in Alabama.  45 professionals and 5 amateurs competed in this world classic event.  Terry’s 4th place was the best placing by an amateur in the last 10 years.  Terry was just 3lbs 7oz out of 1st place.  Congratulations Terry!!

President, Ron Ferris

Highlights from General / Board Meetings

Meetings for the club were held in November and December ’06, and in January and February ’07.  The club has re-gained corporation status.  A fun hunt for youth was organized and held in December with a lot of positive remarks.  A nominating committee recommended a slate of candidates for 2007 elections.  The slate was voted in, as presented, at the annual meeting.  Ron Ferris, president, Andy Giegold, vice president, Donna Conley, Secretary/Treasurer, and board of director members, Jason Barile, Lisa Cleveland, Tim Conley, Charlie Edwards, Christin Featherston, Larry Harris, John Kennedy, Alan Montgomery, and Chris Snyder will all serve, and are all open for comments and suggestions from the membership.  It is the hope of the club leaders to continue this year with fun, exciting, successful events offering something for all club members to enjoy and be active with their German Shorthaired Pointers.  If anyone has new ideas for activities please contact an officer or board member or plan to attend the next board meeting, scheduled for March 24, after the fun hunt / training date / mock hunt test at Barne’s Hunting Farm in Morgantown, IN.   Check out the calendar for the club’s upcoming plans and become involved with your beloved GSP!!

Junior/Youth Hunting Day

Our club sponsored the 1st Junior/Youth Hunting Day on December 31, 2006. This event was held at Flatrock Hunting Preserve in Rush County.

We had 10 young hunters signed up for this special day but due to parent errors and scheduling problems, we only had 5 brave young adults participate. They enjoyed some clay bird shooting along with shooting instructions provided by every adult at the event. Nevertheless, these fine young people scored on several targets despite all of the help! Then it was off to the bird field to watch the dogs, located the pheasants, and, of course, shoot some birds. This location provided a viewing area where everyone could watch the action. Talk about pressure on the kids. We had one young lady shoot her first bird with her dad and dog watching. We had a young man, see bird dogs working for the very first time and likewise harvest a pheasant. Every mother and father would have been proud of how these young adults handled themselves. I am proud to say that all of the young adults were able to harvest multiple pheasants. While the kids were excited and having a great time, it was observed that all of the adults were having as much, if not more fun, than the kids! One volunteer was screaming like a wild person every time our juniors scored. He, along with all of the volunteers will be back again next year!! You just had to be there to understand how exciting this was for all of us.

I can not wait for next year’s event and would welcome all of our membership to get involved with our kids. If you have any ideas to make this event even better, please submit you ideas to me and I will start planning next years Junior/Youth Hunting Day.
