President’s Message
All the rain we've had this spring didn't seem to help the mushrooms in my area. Hopefully it will stop before the June quail and pheasant hatch. Pen raised birds will soon be available so we can resume training.
The Gander Mountain collar clinic was well attended by members of the club with 14 members attending with at least as many dogs. Rumor has it that Lucky Doug Featherston came to buy a collar and went home the winner of the collar raffle from DT.
Our picnic is set for June 11th at GVCC in Waverly from 10:00am -4:00pm. Activities will include training demos on starting a young dog, water work, upland bird training, a fish fry compliments of member Gary Miles and some sheet shooting for young and old. Bring your shot guns and enjoy some practice. Bring your young members for some instructional shooting tips. Members experienced in teaching obedience and showing will be on hand to assist anyone with these activities.
We need volunteers to help with the Carl Kelly Memorial Camp in Lafayette on June 21st. Please contact Allen Montgomery, Tim Conley or myself if you can help out.
Another training session is set for June 24th at my Blue River Hunting Preserve. Andy will be there to assist you as well as several others. Water is available for working dogs and teaching young dogs to swim. 13 week old Tenn Red quail will be used. Please give me a call or Email the number of birds you will need. We will try to start around 10:00 am. The preserve is located East of Indianapolis off U.S. 52. Go 2 miles east of Morristown, IN to CO RD 600 E., turn N 11/2 miles to preserve on left, 11500 N. 600 E. More training sessions will be scheduled throughout the summer and early fall.
Each and every member is encouraged to attend the picnic. An RSVP to me @ Ferronhaus@hotmail.com would be helpful in determining how many fish Gary has to catch.
In case you were wondering how the vote on the black amendment turned out, it was defeated for lack of 2/3 majority. 52% voted Yes and 48% voted NO. I'm sure it will be presented again in the future. It seems unrealistic to evaluate liver dogs for confirmation out of black parents, but not their black litter-mates. But hey, this is America and we sometimes do some silly things.
Looking forward to see you at the Picnic.
Ron Ferris

GSPC of IN Welcomes our newest members:
Please join me in welcoming these new GSPC of IN members: David Thacker from Rushville IN, Terry McWilliams from Greenfield IN, and Miranda and Vince Guerrini from Indianapolis IN.
A board of directors meeting was held April 23, 2006 at Gander Mountain in Greenwood, IN. Attending were officers Ron Ferris, Andy Giegold, and Donna Conley, board members Tim Conley, Jason Barile, Chris Snyder, John Kennedy, Larry Harris, Larry Sowinski, and Kari Sowinski. Also in attendance were club members Doug Featherston, Tanya Harris, and Dan Allen. A club treasury report stated a balance of $12,752.38. An updated membership report reflected that we have 78 members listed. It would be great to see some veteran members step up to mentor some of the new members with their young GSP pups. Positive remarks were heard about the recent spring hunt test. Chris Snyder is already working on details for the fall hunt test scheduled for Sept 30 & Oct 1. Doug Featherston gave an informative report on his research into walking field trials. He suggested that we begin with a sanctioned match – maybe in Oct of this year. Doug is also checking on our club re-joining the Sportsman’s Round Table. The show committee was reported to be actively working on local and national specialty shows per Kari Sowinski. Char Rutar is our GSPCI delegate at the national level. The club’s officers are still working on re-gaining our corporate and non-profit status. The club now has an AKC official copy of our by-laws. Andy Giegold is still taking orders for shirts, hats, jackets, etc with our club’s logo on them. Contact him for further information. Enthusiastic discussion was held about the up-coming events, Gander Mountain Gun Dog Day May 6, Fun Day Picnic June 11, ICO youth camp Hunting Dog Demonstrations June 21, and Muncie conformation show’s Meet the Breeds August 19. Dates for future training days are being checked out and hopefully scheduled for the summer months. Jason Barile sent in our club’s vote at the national level for officers Dean Browning and Sue Clemmons, and to accept the color of black for our breed. It was suggested by Ron Ferris and approved by the board of directors to form a health committee to deal with health concerns about our own GSP breed. The club’s desire is to still do something for our juniors in the way of a junior fund or scholarship fund. Members are researching the criteria for this. At the close of the meeting, it was decided to do something to acknowledge all of our many new members. Every GSPCI member will receive a new membership card. The board of directors is excited about the huge increase in membership and we hope to keep growing bigger and stronger and better and have an interest and place for everyone!
The GSPC of INDIANA's current membership stands @ 80 families. Included in this issue of the GSPC INDIANA NEWSLETTER, you will find your "Membership Cards" ... (unless, of course, you have already received yours at a recent club event). The cards utilize the artwork of the club's logo, reference to the club's web-site, member's name, & calendar year for which dues were paid through. A special Thanks goes out to club member Gary Miles for promptly supplying us with these through his printing business!
NSS Meeting:
The following decisions were made and will move onto the GSPCA board for a final vote later this Summer.
NSS Site 2009 - Sacramento CA - final motel site pending
BOB and choice of sex - Michael Faulkner
Remaining sex – Dana Cline
Sweeps Patty Crowley
Futurity - Charlene Rutar
It was voted to add Dual Champion Class at NSS. Unfortunately, there was only one DC entered at the NSS this year in Phoenix that I was aware of, but perhaps this will encourage more participation from our Duals in the future.
Thank you for allowing me to represent the GSPCIN at our NSS in Phoenix.
