President’s Message - by Charlie Edwards
Happy holidays to everyone!! We are now in that fine time of year where it is one holiday celebration after another with only brief periods of work to get in the way. I know I had much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving and I got to take some time off to be lazier than usual and enjoy our puppies.
We certainly had much to celebrate with the completion of our very successful fall hunt tests on October 29 & 30th. I want to thank Chris Snyder, Kari Sowinski and all the other hunt test committee members for doing a great job and conducting very well-run events. We had all the entries we could handle and we had excellent judges. Everyone that attended had a good time, good food and we had many qualifiers. Having great weather certainly didn’t hurt either since at the Weimaranar Club of Greater Louisville’s hunt tests the next weekend in Kentucky; they had to deal with excessive heat then tornadoes. Again, my thanks to everyone that worked so hard to put on our hunt tests and to everyone that brought us their entries.
Please take note of the annual meeting brunch that will be held in January. This is our only true meeting where all the club members can get together and discuss the club’s plans for the coming year and general business. We had good attendance last year but I would like to see even more of you come out and introduce yourselves. Also please remember to check our website, www.gspcindiana.org, for information on all our club’s activities. Lisa Stovall does a great job of keeping it up-to-date and it has been very useful for downloading hunt test premiums and brace sheets once they are drawn. This makes for much better communication than in the past. You will notice that there is information posted on our next major club event after the annual meeting and that is our spring specialty show held along with the Indy Winter Classic dog shows in February. Becky Feigh has done a great job getting everything organized and we have some really good judges for this year. There should also be an excellent crop of young dogs entered so I urge you to come out and watch even if you don’t normally “do” dog shows. It is a good opportunity to see what a dog show is like and to mingle with your fellow club members.
Also if you have a desire to serve as an officer of the club, participate on the board, or chair a committee, let us know about it. We will be putting together a slate this month to be voted on at the annual meeting. Don’t be shy. If it seems like the same people are always running everything, it is because no one else is stepping up to help out. There is plenty for everyone to do and we need your participation. If you don’t feel like you know enough about certain events to help, believe me we will educate you. This is your club.
As I have written here before, I have really appreciated the opportunity to serve as your president. This is one of the best GSP clubs in the country composed of really good people. We don’t always agree with each other on everything but I do believe we all want to do the right thing by our dogs in an ethical and sportsmanlike manner. I also really appreciate everyone’s willingness to help each other with our dogs and to help answer questions about them. If you are an old-timer, always try to help out the novices and introduce them to the many facets of this sport. Remember you started out that way once also. If you are new to German Shorthairs or the many activities involving them, don’t hesitate to ask questions of others. You can’t learn if you don’t ask, and if it keeps you from participating because you didn’t understand then we have all lost out.
Have a happy and safe holiday and I will see you in January.
Charlie Edwards

Fall Hunt Test Wrap Up - by Chris Snyder
The fall hunt test was just wonderful. The weather was great, birds were jet airplanes, and the judging went off without a hitch. All who participated had a great time. The judges said they really enjoyed the test and said the club did a great job. They would love to return to judge again. I would like to thank Charlie Edwards, Ron Ferris, Larry and Kari Sowinski, Dan Allen, Char Rutar, Larry Harris, Dave Bertram, John Kennedy and the Conley family for all their help. Looking forward to the spring hunt test. I hope to see you all there.

Hunt Test Secretary’s Report - by Kari Sowinski
First I would like to thank all those that helped make things run smoothly. All your hard work and devoted time was really appreciated. As this was the first time I was the Hunt test secretary I really didn’t know what I was getting myself into. However I would love to continue to do this as long as I am here because of all the support and extended help from those of you who have done this before. That being said, we had a number of dog’s pass and receive a leg towards their titles. Our judges were great and the weather was better than anyone could have ordered. Again, thank all of you for making this fall test so successful.
Kari Sowinski

Bybee vd. Westwind MH, “Gretta”, owned by Fielding Turner & Gary Hutchinson
Seniors:
We had two dogs that passed on Saturday to gain their senior hunter title and only one other that passed all weekend long. The morning proved to be poor scent conditions and the dogs all seemed excited to be out hunting. We had a number of call backs that stressed our time restraints but the set ups proved to hinder the dogs more than helping them. It seems unfortunate but I think that it shows that the dogs do better when they are on their own and in a more natural hunt. Good job for all the diligent training.
Saturday:

What to Feed - by Phil Rutar
If you’re like me, the overwhelming variety of dog foods, formulations, and supplements can get pretty confusing. I ran across the following article by Jennifer L. S. Pearsall in the September issue of American Hunter that provides some basic information on the subject.
Dog Diet Secrets
As every human athlete knows, diet is a crucial component of successful performance. If you consume the ideal proportions of fats, proteins and carbohydrates your body will be able to utilize them better. Despite this fact, when it comes to gundogs, most of us buy the first bag of dog food that catches our eye. You can do better than this. Here’s how.
All the major brands you’ll find in your supermarket, and even most in the discount markets, are balanced foods. When fed in the recommended quantity for a dog’s body weight (as listed on the bag), they meet all your dog’s nutritional requirements. But simply meeting these needs doesn’t mean you’re optimizing your dog’s performance.
First and foremost, a canine is a meat eater. Look at the ingredient list on the bag and you’ll notice that the first item is often corn or cornmeal. Now, corn products are roundly acceptable carbohydrates for you dog, but corn shouldn’t top the ingredient list.
So you need meat, but what kind? Lots of beef is promoted out there, as is lamb and chicken. Chicken meal is best, followed by chicken byproduct, because chicken is by far the most digestible, usable protein you can give you dog. By “usable”, I mean that more of the protein is put to use by the dog; in other words, you’ll feed less of it than other protein sources to get the same nutritional benefits, resulting in less waste in the kennel and in your wallet. Soy, for instance, is a great protein source, but dogs don’t digest it well. You’d have to feed more of it to your dog to meet its nutritional requirements. Also, stay away from unspecified “meat” listings, because you have no way of knowing what that meat is.
Ingredients aren’t enough by themselves, of course. They also have to be in the right proportions. A working dog should have a food that has a ratio of about 28- to 30-percent protein and 20-percent fat. Your bird dog should be on this food year-round. This means don’t switch to one of the “low-calorie” alternatives during the off season when his physical activity is bound to be less. Most dog foods cut protein to get the calorie count down; if you sacrifice protein in a working dog’s diet, you’ll make it harder for your dog to get back into peak condition when the next season starts, even when you transition back to his “working food”. If you’re worried about weight gain during periods of inactivity, simply cut back the portion of your regular food, not the quality of the food itself.
One thing that many hunters don’t realize is that premium foods that list chicken first and that have the correct protein-to-fat ratios are not usually sold in supermarkets; in fact, you may even have trouble finding them in the big national pet chains. Try a livestock supply store or smaller specialty pet stores instead. You’ll also probably find that prices are significantly lower in these places than in your usual grocery store.
· If you’re breeding your own dogs, switch your bitch to a premium puppy food about two weeks before she whelps. Keep her on the puppy food until she weans, then slowly transition her over a week or two back to her regular, premium adult formula.
· Fat puppies are cute, but excess weight doesn’t do a puppy’s body any good. Too much fat puts undue stress on plates and joints, and studies have shown both a higher incidence of hip displasia and an earlier onset of the aging process when puppies are overweight.
· Once you’ve transitioned to an adult formula – usually between 6 months and your dog’s first birthday – stick with it. Permanently. Unless your dog is not showing the performance he should or is showing a dull coat or some other physical deficiency, switching your dog’s food is not in his best interest. He does not get “bored” with his food, so disregard the marketing that says otherwise.
· Today’s dog foods are extremely well balanced, so much so that unless you have your own chemistry lab at home and are willing to do blood and urine analysis routinely, you can trust what you put in his bowl; in fact, unless your dog has a specific problem that needs treating, both the nutritional supplements sold in the stores and your table scraps to more harm than good.
· There’s no such thing as a picky eater, only a dog that’s been free fed. Dogs that have food left for them to eat whenever they feel like it are not only more likely to become “picky”, they will be more likely to refuse food when they need it most – after one day’s hunt and before the next. Put the food down, give the dog 15 minutes, then pick up the bowl. And do it at the same time every day. Do this and your dog will feed reliably, all the time, even on the road and after a hunt – and if he doesn’t you’ll know something is wrong.
· Don’t switch your dog to a “senior” formula as he ages. Most of these foods are just “lite” formulas with a different name, and they’ve likely reduced protein to gut the calorie content. If your aging dog is gaining weight, simply cut back his portion. He’ll thank you with another successful season in the field – even if it is at a slower pace.
